If you read this blog regularly, you know that I was dreading sending my 4 year old to preschool last month and by “dread,” I really mean “eyes welling up for months at the mere thought of sending my sweet baby away.” Totally irrational, I know now, but what can I say? I knew I was going to miss that sweet little face of his and all the precious moments. And I do, I really do, but (and here’s the part that kinda kills me to say) having a little more “me time” during the week has been an absolute game changer in regards to my personal and professional happiness.
A bit of background if you’re new around here, I am the mother of two little boys (6 & 4) and for the last few years have been balancing both parenting and blogging. My oldest started kindergarten last year but I still had a super fun (but demanding!) 3 year old at home so creating projects had to be squeezed in whenever I had a free moment (usually before 6 AM and after 9 PM.) and writing posts often happened with a little one on my lap.
I know I’m not the first nor the last with that kind of grueling schedule but it was exhausting for all of us and most days I found myself only able to give 50% to both my work and my kids. Let me tell you, knowing that you’re only able to give a percentage of your best to your kids because you’re being pulled in every direction doesn’t make for a very happy mama. Something had to change…
Luckily, just when we started wondering how much longer we, as a family, could survive my schedule, it came time to enroll my 4 year old son in a half day preschool program. Just as with my eldest son, we thought it would be a good transition into kindergarten next year and I’m happy to report, it’s been an absolutely wonderful experience so far!
He loves that he gets to play with friends (including his cousin and some farm animals) and then comes home to nap for a couple hours. I love that while he’s having fun, I’m getting some much needed time for project commitments, responding to potential collaborations, and even squeezing in a few minutes of relaxation with a hot cup of coffee, a few of my favorite magazines I picked up at Albertsons, and an impromptu coloring page session! (Psst…Take advantage of $1.00 off participating titles (PEOPLE®, InStyle®, People StyleWatch®, Real Simple®, and Sunset®) with this digital offer until 10/18/15 while supplies last)
Favorite Way to Relax
You’ve probably figured out that I’m a huge fan of coloring as a way to relax. I’ve said it a million times but there’s just something about focusing on adding color to an image that really allows me to let it all go. I drew this “More Than Pumpkin” free coloring page one morning while going through an especially gratitude-rich moment (which coincidentally have been occurring more since I’m not so stressed out all the time lately!). Anyone who loves you more than pumpkin spice everything is a keeper!
None of this is to say that I would have done anything differently in the early years of parenting. Blogging and working with the craft industry has allowed me years of fort-making, puzzle-building, zoo-trekking memories with my boys. Waking up at 5 in the morning to work was always a sacrifice I was willing to make if it meant I could tuck them in for their afternoon naps.
Try as I may to stop it, my little boys are growing up and their lives are transitioning to include more of the wide world around them. I miss them like crazy every second of every day but you know what? My world is transitioning too and the more I look around, the more excited I get about my place in it and that is ten times better than pumpkin spice everything!
