It has come to my attention that I don’t have a single 4th of July project on Tried & True. Yup, that right. Not. A. Single. One. (Unless you count the Mini Apple Pies I made for the Little Golden Books Shower but that’s kinda a stretch.) Absolutely pathetic, I tell you, and I have made a resolution to remedy that this year, beginning with this 4th of July Rustic Flag!
I’ve had this letter press tray for over 10 years (picked it up at a flea market for 10 bucks!) and while I absolutely adore it, have never really been able to put it to good use. The holes are too small for most knick-knacks (which collect too much dust anyway!) but not small enough for our growing Lego mini-figure collection. The whole thing is about 36″ x 18″ so it’s fairly large and definitely would need enough space to be a focal piece. Perfect for a homemade rustic American flag!
I used the Core’dinations Seasonal Impressions scrapbooking paper for the flag background and sanded it down with the Sand It Kit (which I totally recommend!) I then proceeded to measure and cut a paper insert for every single rectangular space. This part was absolutely tedious and mindless work so I highly suggest watching a movie or show while doing it (Orange Is The New Black, anyone?)
Here’s the full rustic flag with all the little pieces added. Whew! Most of the pieces were just wedged in place but some of them were a bit too small and I had to use a little double sided tape to keep them in place. I love that there’s absolutely nothing permanent about this so that I can always change it out. It took 10 years for me to come up with this idea, I’m not changing it any time soon!
I think the flag works fine just how it is but I decided to add a little bit more with a small “Home Of The Brave” banner made with my Silhouette Cameo. Since I don’t plan on keeping this up permanently, I kept it simple by just taping the back of the letters to some twine and hanging with some decorative washi tape. I probably would have sewn them together if I was looking for something more sturdy but I was on a bit of a time constraint to post this today! (Bad blogger, bad!)
So, there you go. I officially have one 4th of July project on my blog. Woohoo! I’m making up for lost time and will be posting another fun patriotic tutorial on Wednesday so don’t forget to check in. (When it rains, it pours, huh?!) Until then, check out all these amazing patriotic projects from some pretty great blogs!
