Have you all seen the Disney movie, Something Wicked This Way Comes? Oh my goodness, this movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid! It was just childish enough to convince my parents it was appropriate for young children but even going back to watch it as an adult, that movie is seriously creepy. There’s something about carousals that scare me to this day! The movie is based on a great Ray Bradbury novel but both the literary and cinematic versions take their title from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. I thought it would be fun to a make a Something Wicked Halloween Porch Banner for the outdoor-themed Silhouette Challenge this month. Scroll to the bottom to see more fun projects!

Something Wicked Halloween Porch Banner
Materials:
- Burlap
- Black Spray Paint
- Freezer Paper
- “Something Wicked” Free Silhouette Cutting File
- Wood Dowel or Stick
Step One. Use your Silhouette and the “Something Wicked” Free Silhouette Cutting File to create the stencil out of freezer paper. I looked at a few tutorials for cutting freezer paper online and the majority said to cut wax side up (make sure to flip image!) with vellum settings. My blade is old so I went with a blade length of 2 instead of 1. Iron securely to a 13″ x 23″ piece of burlap.
Step Two. Tape off the outer edges of exposed burlap to protect from over-spray. Using short, controlled sprays, begin applying the paint to the burlap until you’re happy with the coverage. Remove tape and stencil once the paint has dried.
Step Three. Depending on how much time and effort you want to put into this banner, you can either sew the wood dowel in place or just use some super strong double-sided tape. All that’s left to do is hang!
This Way Comes
Since making this banner, I’ve been reading this quote over and over and I’m just love it so much! I had to read a bit of a online cheat sheet to remember exactly where it was used in Macbeth but knowing that the witches are saying this of Macbeth’s arrival, it’s just brilliant. I hope you enjoy making this Something Wicked Halloween Outdoor Banner as much as I did. Feel free to use the free file in any non-commercial manner you’d like!

This is such a fun idea for Halloween! This quote always makes me think of Harry Potter 🙂

So cute and I love that you used a Shakespeare quote instead of the typical Halloween quotes. What a great job! I’m sharing this!

Wow you could not have made that look easier! Love this. Burlap scares the crap out of me…but this might be something worth trying to get my feet wet. What did you put behind the burlap (since presumably the paint would soak through), to ensure it didn’t damage anything on the other end?

P.S. I would love if you linked this up at our Welcome Home Wednesday link party going live at 8 am EST tomorrow (today?)…it’s really great!

question. what do you do for the cutouts inside the letters such as the D, A, R, etc.? your template looks like they would be not part of it, but the finished result has them knocked out – do you iron them on individually?
Vanessa Brady says
Good catch! I actually made this twice and ended up ironing the small cutouts separately. Looks good both ways, just a matter of personal preference.
