The summer months are upon us and that means two things: we’ll be spending tons of family time outside and we’ll all have tons of mosquito bites. (insert sad face)
I’ve always been an attractant for mosquito bites and, unfortunately, I’ve passed that onto all my kids. In fact, my husband calls me the “human bug catcher.” If I’m in the vicinity, odds are the mosquitoes are only biting me!
Insect Spray Away
Since we’re always getting bitten by mosquitoes, I’ve tried almost every bug repellent on the market. I usually try to stay away from serious chemicals but when it’s really bad (camping), I’ve got no problem pulling out the big guns! (I prefer Picaridin over DEET.)
When we’re just hanging out in our backyard, however, I always reach for this homemade mosquito bug repellent! Made with just three simple ingredients, I don’t mind putting it all over myself, and more importantly, my kids.
“Stay Away Spray” Free SVG
Of course, I couldn’t just leave the bottle bare, right?! I used my handy Cricut Digital Cutting Machine to quickly cut this “Stay Away Spray” label. This white permanent vinyl from Expressions Vinyl worked perfectly.
I absolutely love the look of vinyl on amber bottles but it’s not just for cosmetic purposes. (check out my Cleaning Bottle Labels!) We keep most of our outdoor sprays in our laundry room so having a clear label prevents any mishaps.
Wouldn’t want to accidentally use this bug spray as window cleaner!

Homemade Mosquito Repellent
Supplies:
- 40-60 drops Bug Away Essential Oil Blend (start with 40 drops and increase if necessary)
- 2 oz. Witch Hazel
- 1 tsp Coconut Oil
- 1 4 oz Amber Spray Bottle
Instructions
- Let's talk about ingredients for a bit! I've listed the exact brands I used for this bug spray but with the exception of the Bug Away essential oil blend, you can totally sub out any of them with items you may have on hand.I've tried a number of essential oil blends to keep bugs away but for some reason, this Rocky Mountain Oil blend works the best!
- To make the insect spray, just add all the ingredients to the amber bottle and shake to combine. Honestly, I don't even measure everything out exactly. I just full the amber bottle halfway with witch hazel, add about 1 tbsp of coconut oil, and then count out the drops of essential oil. Done!
- Optional: download and cut the "Stay Away Spray" svg file to apply to the front of your amber bottle!
Family Fun Outside
