Hello everyone, welcome to Day 2 of Shark Week! You ready for Vanessa’s Random Fact of the Day? I’m not a huge fan of sweaters. Sure, I have a cardigan or two but rarely do I wear actual sweaters. Blame it on the warm climate I live in or sensory issues with the scratchy fibers, there is no love lost between sweaters and I. What I do love, however, are cowls! They’re sweet and useful and as it turns out, it’s really easy to make a simple cowl.
First things first, you’re going to have to find the right kind of sweater. You need something with at least 80% animal fiber (wool, alpaca, cashmere). If you’ve already got one in the back of your closet that you’re willing to sacrifice, awesome. If not, head down to your local thrift store and buy one there. Chances are you might even find one that someone already felted for you!
To felt, just throw the sweater in with your laundry on hot wash (use a mesh bag if you don’t want little sweater fibers everywhere.) Remove sweater from washing machine (and mesh bag if applicable) and place in dryer to dry completely. You’ll know your sweater is felted when you can cut into the material and it doesn’t fray. I didn’t felt mine as much as it could have been because I wanted the material to remain fluid-like and soft. If you want your cowl to be thicker, feel free to pop the sweater back in the wash and start the cycle all over again.
Once you’re happy with the feel of the sweater, lay it flat on a table and cut off the lower section (everything below the arms and neckline.)
And that’s it, you now have a super awesome cowl!
Of course, you can add some embellishments to you cowl if you feel like it and have the time. I added a minimal flower design with a couple circles of wool felt and a button sewn in. Totally up to you want to add something or leave your cowl plain. Both are beautiful!
And that’s it. Just think of all the unused sweaters out there that can be turned into the perfect Autumn accessory! Hope you enjoyed this tutorial for a Super Simple Cowl. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the last project of Scarf Week!

I LOVE this tutorial! First, I love how easy it is, and second, I don’t know about you, but I have accidentally felted sweaters in the wash before… meaning they would fit a 12 year old when I’m done. Now instead of giving up the sweater I can turn it into a gorgeous cowl! Brilliant!!!
