I think of myself as a fairly calm person but, as to be expected, the conflicts of my personal and professional life can be rough sometimes and occasionally, stress gets the best of me. Knowing the effect that stress can have on physical well-being, I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands and actively work toward improving my family and my reaction toward the inevitable stressors of life. This Kid-Friendly Meditation Corner is the perfect place to start!
We live in a relatively small house so finding an unused section to convert into a meditation corner was almost impossible. Pretty much the only option was to take out a rarely used seat in our master bedroom. Not that big of a deal since, quite honestly, the seat was used more for laundry than anything! I’ve been wanting to make a meditation nook for a while now so I had quite a few things already set aside to use when ready. Once the space was cleared, I was ready to put it all together!
Because I was planning on having my two little boys work on calming techniques as well, I had to be a bit cautious with exactly what I placed in the Meditation Corner. The two glasses used for breathing exercises are actually plastic (more on them later) and the aromatherapy mister/essential oil is placed out of their reach. I added a super supportive foam pad covered in fabric I already had and a water-activated drawing board I had bought years ago. The final addition was a small wood shelf my husband quickly assembled with some spare wood from garage. The perfect size for our small corner!

Kid-Friendly
In order to make this space appealing to my two boys, I knew I would have to find the balance between adding items that promoted calm thoughts but that would also appeal to their sense of curiosity and constant state of motion. The two glasses with wood beads are used as tactile reminders for breathing exercises. They know to breathe in as they grab a ball from one glass and out as they place it in the other.
The water activated drawing board give them a creative outlet to manage stress without me having to worry about too much of a mess. Since my boys are older and are responsible around glass, I bought a breakable hour glass to add to the Meditation Corner. It’s magnetized so my kids (and I!) absolutely love to watch it go!
The only rule for the Meditation Corner is that we all know that it can be used at any time by anyone who feels like they might need a little time to cool down and de-stress. The Meditation Corner is always a place of comfort and is never used for punitive measures. Kinda hard for kids to work through stress when your parents are screaming at you to go to the corner!
Lately, the Meditation Corner isn’t the only weapon I have from chronic stress. I’ve been using the Spire Mindfulness + Activity Tracker and it’s been absolutely eye-opening. All I have to do is clip it on my bra in the morning and then it tracks my calm, focused, and tense moments throughout the day. It even buzzes at me when it tracks prolonged tense breathing so that I can decide whether or not to try and chill out with the guided meditations the app provides or maybe with a few minutes in the Meditation Corner.
I totally consider the Spire as my personal “trainer” for creating mindfulness around my breathing. Plus, it has a built in activity tracker that keeps track of the number of steps and calories I use throughout the day. Such an amazing piece of technology!

Hope you enjoyed this look at our new Meditation Corner and consider putting one together for your own family. We’ve only been using it for the last month or so and already I feel like it’s made a drastic difference in our lives. Thanks for visiting and as always, feel free to comment if you have any questions!

I just stumbled across your Blog and I love this idea!!! I’ve been meditating for years and want to introduce it to my kids now that they are getting older and understand it more. I actually have my own meditation space but now I cannot wait to make a meditation corner for the family. Thanks for this awesome idea!
