Have you guys watched Inside Out yet? It’s such a great movie to enjoy with kids and adults alike (but especially kids!) Honestly, I’m a huge fan of anything that teaches kids about their emotions but I really like how Inside Out does it in a way that’s entertaining and informative. Can you tell how much I love this movie? So much so that as soon as it was released, we ran out to Walmart to immediately pick up the Inside Out DVD and grabbed a few toys while we were at it!
Growing Up Is Tough
So, just a bit of background in case you’re new here, I have two boys (7,4) who are absolutely amazing and insanely crazy all at the same time. Since they were tiny, I’ve always worked hard at getting them comfortable with the intense emotional states kids seem to experience throughout a day but, as many of you know, it can be difficult to get them to open up sometimes. I made a quick Emotions Box that gives my boys an easy way to tell me how they’re feeling and fits the Inside Out Core figures perfectly.
Inside Out Emotion Box
Materials:
- Small Wood Tray
- Acrylic Paint (White, Black, Red, Blue, Green, Purple, Yellow)
- Spouncers
Process
Paint a couple of white coats of paint over the tray until wood grain is covered. After white has dried completely, free hand paint (or use a stencil) the words “Today I Feel” at the top of the tray. Use spouncers to apply different colored circles all over the tray. Allow to dry completely before hanging.
How Are You Feeling?
We’ve had our Inside Out Emotion Box hanging on the kids’ bedroom wall for a while now and it’s been awesome seeing them interact with it. Sometimes they come out and tell me to go look at their Emotion Box so I can see how they’re feeling and sometimes they tell each other to look. Either way, thanks to Inside Out, they’re talking about and taking responsibility for their emotions!

What a cute idea, Vanessa! Maybe even adults need this 😉

I love this idea! It makes kids be mindful of the way they are feeling, which allows them to learn to be responsible for their own feelings. Great! #client
