Are you interested in finally purchasing your first laser engraving and cutting machine? Or, like me, are you looking to upgrade? I’ve had an entry-level laser machine for a couple of years, so when Creality reached out to me about testing their Falcon2 Pro, I was eager to try a machine with a bit more strength behind it. In this Creality Falcon2 Pro guide, I’ll discuss some of the features of the Falcon2 Pro, essential safety tips you should consider, materials that can be used, common mistakes, and my opinion about this machine.
Don’t forget to check out the “Love Your Life” SVG file at the end of this post to inspire your first project. Let’s get started!
Overview of the Creality Falcon2 Pro
If you’re unfamiliar with Creality, they are well-known in the 3D printer market. I’ve actually had my eye on one of their 3D Resin Printers for a while now!
In 2021, Creality released its first laser engraving and cutting machine and has been at the forefront of research and production ever since. The Falcon2 Pro, released earlier this year, is their first all-enclosed laser machine and has earned FDA Class 1 Safety Certification (unlike most desktop laser engravers.)
As mentioned above, I had previously been using a bit more of a beginner laser machine but was getting frustrated at the lack of materials I could cut. Creality sent me their Falcon2 Pro 40W, which includes a 1.6W laser module that is better for more detailed work. They also have a 22W version that is easier on your pocketbook if you don’t need as much power.
Getting Started: Setting Up the Falcon2 Pro
Unboxing the Falcon2 Pro was a bit of a process because the lid of the machine comes unassembled. Don’t worry, everything you need is in there!
To finish the setup, follow the instructions in the manual, which include assembling the cover, attaching the laser module, and connecting the fan and light to power with the included screwdriver. For additional guidance, I found it helpful to watch the Creality Set Up Videos and videos from creators on YouTube.
After setting up, you’ll connect the Falcon2 Pro to a computer via the USB cord. You’ll then need to use an editing system to pull in files, edit them, and control the machine. I decided to use Lightburn because I had heard so many good things about it.
In LightBurn, you should fully perform several calibrations to optimize using the Falcon2 Pro. Once completed, the built-in camera allows easy design alignment and real-time preview.
Tips & Tricks for First-Time Users
- Start Small: Before diving into a complex project, try a few test engravings on scrap material. Starting small will help you get comfortable with the machine and see how different settings affect the outcome.
- Read the User’s Guide: It’s worth it. The manual will help you get the most out of your Falcon2 Pro. Also, make sure to check out the files on the flash drive.
- Watch all the Videos: I watched all the official Creality videos and third-party creator videos I could. It helped me watch someone go through the motions when I couldn’t see enough detail in the illustrations.
- Be Prepared: I’m not trying to give you a dire warning, but lasers are not toys and should be used with proper caution. Read the safety tips below to prevent improper use.
Essential Safety Tips for Laser Engraving
Laser engraving is incredibly fun, but safety should always come first. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind when using your Falcon2 Pro:
- Protect Your Eyes: Lasers can be harmful to your eyes. Creality knows this and has created a fully transparent and safe cover that filters out all the dangerous light. The machine won’t even work if it senses the lid is open, ensuring your safety at all times!
- Ensure Proper Ventilation: Laser engraving can produce fumes, especially when working with certain materials. The Falcon2 Pro has a built-in fan that can funnel air out of a nearby window or through an air purifier.
- Fire Safety: It’s rare, but there’s always a small risk of fire when working with lasers. Having a CO2 fire extinguisher or Fire Blanket within reach is a good idea. I love that the Falcon2 Pro has safety protocols that will completely shut down if a device detects a flame and includes an emergency stop button.
- Regular Maintenance: Keep your machine clean and check for any signs of wear. Being on top of maintenance ensures safety and keeps your engravings looking sharp. Creativity knew this and included an additional lens monitoring alarm that would go off if the laser lens needed cleaning.
Best Materials for the Falcon2 Pro
This wouldn’t be a Creality Falcon2 Pro guide if I didn’t also discuss the amazing materials the laser engraver could use. Here are some materials that work well with the Falcon2 Pro:
- Basswood
- Plywood
- Bamboo
- Cardboard
- Leather
- Acrylic (depending on color and transparency)
- White Tile (painted black)
- And more!
When choosing your material, consider the thickness and type. It’s always a good idea to test on a small piece first to see how the material reacts.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even seasoned crafters can run into issues when starting with a new machine. Here are some common mistakes beginners make with laser engravers—and how to avoid them:
- Incorrect Material Settings: Each material has different settings for optimal results. Using the correct settings can lead to better cuts or engravings. Always check the recommended settings for your material and do a test run.
- Poor Material Selection: Not all materials are suitable for laser engraving. Avoid using anything coated or treated, as it can produce harmful fumes. Stick with raw, untreated materials whenever possible.
- Skipping Maintenance: Regular maintenance is key to keeping your Falcon2 Pro in good working order. Clean the laser lens and the work area after each use.
- Rushing the Process: Laser engraving takes time, especially for detailed designs. Be patient and let the machine do its work. Rushing can lead to mistakes and poor-quality results.
If you do run into issues, keep going! Troubleshooting is part of the learning process and once you’ve solved a problem, you’ll be even more confident in your skills.
Accessories and Add-ons
Depending on the projects you want to make, Creality has some great accessories that will make your job so much easier!
- Rotary Attachment: This tool is a game-changer for engraving cylindrical objects like glasses, bottles, or rolling pins.
- Ventilation System: If you’re working with materials that produce a lot of fumes, a ventilation system can cut back on smells and fumes.
- Laser Modules: If you want to upgrade to a more robust laser, Creality also sells their Falcon2 40W Laser Module separately.
Comparisons with Other Laser Engravers
The laser market is huge and it can be hard to differentiate between your options. Here’s how the Falcon2 Pro compares to other machines in its price range:
- Affordability vs. Functionality: The Falcon2 Pro balances cost and features, making it a strong contender for beginners and experienced crafters. Creality also includes an integrated air assist that can be adjusted depending on the project—that wasn’t included in my previous machine!
- User-Friendly Design: Unlike other advanced laser engravers, which can be intimidating to set up and use, the Falcon2 Pro allows even the most inexperienced beginners to start their laser machine journey.
- Versatility: The Falcon2 Pro stands out for its ability to engrave and cut a wide range of materials. Some other machines might specialize in certain materials but lack the versatility that the Falcon2 Pro offers.
- Consumer Safety: For me, the safety features are the most important! The transparent, light-filtering lid protects the eyes while still allowing you to watch. Dual sensors and lid-off halts are all used to prevent laser leakage.
If you’re unsure which laser engraver to choose, the Falcon2 Pro is a solid option that won’t overwhelm you with unnecessary complexity while offering plenty of room to grow.
My Personal Opinion of the Falcon2 Pro
As mentioned several times in this article, I have used a beginner laser cutter for the last few years but have recently felt like my project needs have begun to outgrow its capabilities. I’m excited about the possibilities for growth the Falcon2 Pro will give me, but there are a few differences between the two machines I want to bring up:
- While not ridiculously complicated, the Falcon2 Pro setup process was more complex than my previous machine, which was assembled straight out of the box.
- My previous machine included an operating program with cutting and engraving specifications for many popular materials. That said, I still had to troubleshoot these settings sometimes with a test material scrap, so you’re better off figuring out the settings yourself.
- The Falcon2 Pro is significantly larger than my previous machine. If space is tight, that might be an issue. I’m super excited about the larger work area (400mm x 415mm), though!
- If you want to use a computer to better control the machine, you’ll need to connect the Falcon 2 Pro to your computer with one of the included USB-C cables. You’ll also need another USB cable and USB port for the camera. I had to use a USB adapter for my laptop to accommodate both. There’s also the option of using the machine offline by inserting a TF card (also called micro SD card) in card slot found on the side of the machine.
- Since there is no specific operating program, I’m having to learn LightBurn to import files and send them to the Falcon2 Pro. I create most of the files I cut in Adobe Illustrator, so learning this program has been on my to-do list. Based on my limited use of LightBurn so far, the program seems straightforward, and I quickly figured out how to use it.
- Overall, after completing several cuts, I’ve been impressed with the power and precision of my Falcon2 Pro. The warnings & precautions make me feel much more confident as well. Sacrificing ease of use straight out of the box is worth it for the vast variety of projects I’ll be able to make now!
